Fragrance Statement

Some of what we make smells like a garden. Some of it smells like a memory — and there is no still on earth that can bottle one of those.

So we scent with both: natural materials and synthetic ones, chosen with the same care as everything else that crosses the bench. This page is our whole position on fragrance — what we use, what it is called on a label, and what we promise about it. The only thing you won’t find here is a recipe.

Why We Scent

Scent is not decoration to us. It is half the pleasure of a thing made well — the reason a morning shower wakes you properly, the reason a favorite bar gets missed when it is gone. We could leave everything unscented and call it purity. We would rather make things people love, and be honest about how.

So that is the commitment: not a purity claim, but a plain account of how our scents are built. Where honesty and mystique compete, honesty wins.

What We Scent With

Every scent in the collection is composed from four kinds of material:

• Essential oils. Aromatic oils taken directly from plants — pressed or distilled, nothing added.
• Plant extracts. Botanicals drawn into the oils and butters themselves, carrying their scent along with their benefits.
• Natural fragrances. Composed scents built entirely from materials of natural origin.
• Safe synthetic fragrances. Made rather than grown — for the notes nature cannot supply, for the rare botanicals better left growing, and for a scent that greets you the same way every batch. Each one chosen for how it treats skin before how it smells.

Which of the four a product leans on depends entirely on the scent we are chasing; many use a blend.

What the Label Says

Ingredient labels speak their own language. When a scent is a composed blend, it appears there under a single word — Fragrance — the labelling convention for finished scents, natural and synthetic alike, and the place where every maker’s formulas stay private. Ours included.

What We Promise

Our position, in writing:

• We will never pass a synthetic off as botanical. If a scent is made rather than grown, we say so plainly.
• We will never scent a product quietly. If it is scented, the label tells you.
• We will always answer. Ask about any product and we will tell you which of the four kinds of scent material it uses.
• We keep exactly one secret. The compositions themselves — which materials, in what proportions — are the craft of this house, and they stay ours.
• There is always an unscented choice. Naked Soap is exactly what it says — for skin, or days, that want no scent at all.
• You can steer around scent entirely. Tell the Skin Discovery what you would rather avoid, and it will only recommend what suits.
